At the LA Urban League's BizCamp this July, dozens of teens ages 13 to 18 pitched real businesses to judges: a website design studio, a volleyball coaching service, a custom phone case line, and yes, an AI-powered sticker tracking app. The program runs with NFTE, the national teen-entrepreneurship nonprofit. AI wasn't a special topic. It was just in the toolbox.

Investors keep funding the trend, too. Last week edtech platform imagi raised $4.5 million to teach students to build software by describing what they want, no syntax required.

So if your kid runs a slime stand or a bracelet shop, the question isn't whether they'll ask to use AI. It's whether you'll have an answer ready when they generate a logo in nine seconds.

The honest answer is that AI is both the best assistant a kid entrepreneur has ever had and a machine for skipping the exact struggles the business was supposed to teach. The difference is not the tool. It's the rules. Here's how to draw them.

The one rule that makes all the other rules simple

Before the specifics, here's the principle that settles 90% of cases: AI can help with the work, but it can't do the learning.

A kid business isn't really about the $60 it clears at a fair. It's a machine for teaching things school doesn't: talking to strangers, counting money, hearing no, making something people want. Every task in the business either builds one of those muscles or doesn't. AI belongs on the tasks that don't.

So the test for any AI request is one question: what was this task supposed to teach? If the answer is "nothing, it's just production work," let the robot help. The tasks your kid should always do themselves

Now the red list, the tasks where AI assistance quietly defeats the purpose of the whole project.

Setting the price. Pricing forces a kid to weigh costs, guess what customers will pay, and test it against reality at the table. Ask AI what to charge and you skip the best thinking exercise the business offers. Research, sure. Decision, never.

Talking to customers. No scripts read off a screen, no AI-drafted responses to a customer standing in front of the booth. The stammering, recovering, and improving over a day of selling is the growth.

Counting the money. Every count, by hand, every time. Money counted, stacked, and split into save-spend-share jars becomes an instinct.

Deciding what to do when something flops. Rained-out fair, product nobody bought, partner who quit. The kid proposes the plan B before anyone consults a chatbot. Resilience can't be delegated.

Guardrails by age: 8, 12, and 16 look different

One policy doesn't fit a third-grader and a high-school junior, so scale it in three tiers.

Around 6 to 10: AI is the parent's tool. The kid doesn't have their own chatbot access; you sit together and drive. "Let's ask for lemonade sign ideas" is a fun shared activity, and you're modeling how to treat the output as suggestions, not orders.

Around 11 to 14: supervised license. The kid can use AI for approved business tasks, in shared spaces, with the chat history open to parents, in line with the big providers' age policies (minimums around 13, parental permission for minors). The green list and red list are posted somewhere real, like the fridge. New use cases get pitched to the parent first.

Around 15 to 17: earned autonomy, with disclosure. Teens running real ventures, like the BizCamp crowd, can use AI the way adult founders do, with one standing rule: they can tell you at any moment which parts of their business the robot made and which parts they did. If they can't answer, that's the conversation.

At every tier the direction of travel is the same: more autonomy as they show more judgment.

Privacy rules that are not negotiable

Whatever the age, some lines don't move, and it's worth saying them plainly because kids won't guess them.

Nothing personal goes into a chatbot. Not the kid's full name, school, address, phone number, schedule, or photos of themselves or friends. AI tools remember conversations in ways kids don't expect, and a kid business generates sensitive data: where they'll sell Saturday, which neighbors buy, how much cash came home.

Customer information gets the same protection. If your kid keeps a list of repeat customers, that list never gets pasted into an AI tool to "write personalized messages." Real names of real neighbors stay in the notebook.

Money details stay offline too. Totals for a math check are fine. Payment app logins, card numbers, or account screenshots, never.

And teach the screenshot test: before sending anything to an AI tool, would you be fine with that message being printed and posted at school? None of this requires fear. It requires the same energy as teaching them to lock a bike: the tool is great, the habit protects it.

The honesty rule, and teaching the skill underneath

Two last pieces turn AI from a shortcut into an actual education.

First, the honesty rule: if AI made it, the kid should be able to say so without squirming. A sticker seller whose designs came from a generator should say "I design them with an AI tool and pick the best ones" when a customer asks. The kid who's upfront never has a bad moment later.

Second, teach prompting as a real skill rather than a magic spell.
