Contribution Margin Ratio
The percentage of each revenue dollar that contributes to covering fixed costs and generating profit.
Definition
Contribution margin ratio (CMR) = Contribution Margin / Revenue x 100. While contribution margin is the dollar amount per unit, the ratio expresses it as a percentage. A CMR of 80% means 80 cents of every revenue dollar covers fixed costs. CMR is crucial for break-even analysis, pricing decisions, and understanding how revenue mix affects profitability.
When you offer multiple products or tiers, each has a different CMR. Your blended CMR determines overall business health and how changes in product mix affect the bottom line.
Why it matters for founders
CMR tells you how efficiently revenue translates into profit after variable costs. A higher CMR means you reach profitability faster and have more flexibility in customer acquisition spending.
Example
Zoom's enterprise tier has a ~90% CMR (mostly software, minimal marginal cost), while their phone product has a ~60% CMR (telecom infrastructure costs). As enterprise grew from 30% to 50% of revenue, Zoom's blended margins improved significantly.
