ChatGPT Will Now Suggest Apps Mid-Conversation. Should Yours Be One?
At Dev Day on September 29, OpenAI showed how ChatGPT will recommend and run third-party apps inside a chat, with agents that can pick tools on their own. For early startups, that is a new distribution channel with no billing layer yet. Here is how to decide whether to build for it.

On September 29, OpenAI held its Dev Day. Most of the headlines went to its new agents, called Dots, and a new model. But TechCrunch pointed out a bigger thread running through the announcements. Taken together, they turn ChatGPT into a place where software gets discovered, launched, and used by people and by agents.
Here is the part founders should care about. ChatGPT, which OpenAI says now has 1.2 billion weekly users, will start suggesting apps inside a conversation when it thinks an app can help finish the task. The user can connect the app and start using it right there, without visiting your website or an app store.
That is a new front door. It is also a door owned by someone else. This piece covers what OpenAI announced, who stands to gain, what is still missing, and a simple way to decide whether your startup should build for it now or wait.
What OpenAI announced
There were several connected pieces. It helps to see them together.
In-chat app suggestions. When ChatGPT recognizes that an app could help, it will suggest it in the flow of the conversation. The user connects and keeps going.
Extensions with interactive panels. OpenAI expanded its plugin system so developers can build panels users work in while they chat. A design tool, a calendar, or a project board can live inside ChatGPT instead of a separate tab.
Sign in with ChatGPT. Users can bring their ChatGPT identity to third-party apps and use their existing AI allowance there. OpenAI named 16 launch partners, including Notion, Vercel, and Cognition's Devin.
A friendlier review process. Developers can now track a plugin review, see what needs fixing, request a human reviewer, and update tools without starting over.
An enterprise marketplace. More than 30 partners, including HubSpot, Salesforce, and Figma, are listed. Eligible customers can apply part of their OpenAI spending commitment to approved partner software.
Agents that choose tools. Each Dot gets its own cloud computer and browser and can use connected apps from an ecosystem OpenAI says now tops 4,000 apps.
Why this matters for small startups
Distribution is the hardest problem most early startups face. Paid ads get more expensive every year. Search traffic is shifting as people ask chatbots instead of search engines. App stores are crowded and take a cut.
A channel where the product itself recommends you, at the exact moment a user needs you, is rare. It is the same kind of moment that made the early iPhone App Store and early Facebook apps so powerful for the teams that showed up first.
It also changes who your "user" is. When an agent is choosing which tool to use, the agent reads your descriptions, your permissions, and your tool definitions. A clear, well-scoped plugin may matter more than a pretty landing page. Founders who learned to write for search engines ten years ago now need to write for agents too.
And the identity piece lowers friction. If a user can sign in with an account they already have and bring their AI allowance with them, your onboarding step gets shorter. Every step you remove from signup tends to lift conversion.
The catch: no money layer yet
TechCrunch flagged a big gap. OpenAI did not announce a billing or revenue-sharing system comparable to what Apple and Google run. It has not said users can skip third-party subscriptions, either.
In practice, that means users may still subscribe on your website and then connect that account inside ChatGPT. You keep the customer relationship and the payment. That is good for margins today.
But it also means the rules could change. Platforms often start open to attract developers, then add fees, ranking rules, or restrictions once they have the audience. Nobody knows what OpenAI will do here, and it would be a mistake to plan as if the current terms are permanent.
There is a second risk. OpenAI builds its own apps too. At Dev Day it demoed its own meetings app inside ChatGPT. If your product overlaps with something the platform owner might build, being a guest in its house is a real exposure.

A four-question test before you build
Before you put engineering time into a ChatGPT extension, run through these questions and answer them plainly.
- Does your product finish a task people already start in a chat? Drafting, scheduling, research, design edits, and data lookups are natural fits. Deep, long sessions in a complex tool are harder.
- Can you describe what you do in one clear sentence an agent could act on? If your value is hard to explain, an agent will struggle to pick you.
- Do you own the relationship after the first use? Make sure users end up with an account on your side, so you can reach them if the platform changes.
- Could OpenAI reasonably ship this itself in the next year? If yes, treat the channel as a way to grow fast, not a foundation to build on.
If you answer yes to the first three and no to the last one, the channel is worth a serious test. If you answer no to the first two, your time is likely better spent elsewhere for now.
A short planning exercise, whether on paper or in a tool like Foundra, can help you map where this channel fits against the ones you already use.
How to run a small, cheap test
You do not need to rebuild your product to find out whether this works. Start small.
- Pick one job. Choose the single most common task users do with your product and expose only that as a tool.
- Write tool descriptions carefully. Be specific about what the tool does, what it needs, and what it returns. Vague descriptions get skipped by agents.
- Ask for minimal permissions. Users and reviewers trust apps that request only what they need. Read-only first is a sensible default.
- Track source separately. Tag every signup that comes through ChatGPT so you can compare its activation and retention against your other channels.
- Set a time box. Give the test six to eight weeks. Decide in advance what numbers would make you double down or stop.
The review improvements OpenAI announced help here. Being able to see what needs fixing and update tools without restarting the submission makes quick iteration more realistic for a two-person team.
What the history of platforms tells us
This is not the first time a big platform has tried to become the place where software lives. OpenAI itself opened an app directory in ChatGPT in December 2025. Earlier eras had Facebook apps, browser extensions, and the first mobile app stores.
The pattern is fairly consistent. Early builders get outsized reach because there is little competition and the platform wants to show off good examples. Later, discovery gets crowded, the owner writes stricter rules, and margins tighten.
That does not mean you should stay away. It means you should go in with clear eyes. Use the early window to acquire users you then keep through your own channels: email, your own app, a direct login. Treat the platform as rented land, not owned land.
What to do this week
- Read the new plugin and Sign in with ChatGPT docs. Note what data you can access and what users will see.
- List three tasks your customers could finish inside a chat.
- Pick the one with the clearest single-sentence description.
- Scope a two-week build of a minimal extension for that task.
- Add a direct account step so every user from this channel is also your user.
If the numbers come back strong, expand. If they do not, you spent two weeks learning how agents see your product, which is useful no matter where distribution goes next.
Frequently asked questions
What did OpenAI announce at Dev Day 2026? OpenAI announced in-chat app suggestions, expanded plugins with interactive panels, Sign in with ChatGPT, an improved review process, an enterprise marketplace, and autonomous agents called Dots.
How many people use ChatGPT? OpenAI says ChatGPT has 1.2 billion weekly users, according to TechCrunch.
Does OpenAI take a cut of app revenue? Not as of September 29. OpenAI did not announce a billing or revenue-sharing system comparable to traditional app stores.
What is Sign in with ChatGPT? It lets users log in to third-party apps with their ChatGPT identity and bring their existing AI allowance with them.
Should every startup build a ChatGPT extension? No. It fits best when your product completes a task people already start in a chat and you can keep a direct relationship with users.
